Kenneth BurkeÕs dramatic pen-tad could be of help in developing our focus
Read through the following notes, IF you want to learn more about Burke and the application of Communication studies to our project. This could be a portion of the UNC class syllabus and could be helpful in structuring our approach to this project.
Pentad – by Kenneth Burke – used to discover motive/RhetorÕs worldview or to define emphasis of a group
Dramatism - analysis of human motivation using drama & applicable terms
Action (conscious acts or speech) vs. motion (involuntary response)
Seen as new rhetoric – identification, partially unconscious – common ground brings persuasion
Aristotle argued that rhetoric was for deliberate persuasion
Uses ratios of pentad parts to distinguish reason & motive
Rhetor will usually state the purpose or explanation
Ratios – proportion of pentad terms uses reveals driving force or understanding of discourse – one is primary & the second supports
Individuals are attracted to different elements of pentad – argument s/b constructed based on audience appeal
Language seen as key to world construction – meanings different to different people
Terministic screen – lens, filter, scenario for making interpretations/discovering meaning – view of the world
Focus – find common ground, common denominator, speak the audienceÕs language
Shakespeare – Òall the worldÕs a stageÉÓ
